How the Qur'an was preserved
Memorisation, written record, and the standardisation under Uthman — what each contributed, and what the manuscript evidence shows.
Two channels, not one
The transmission of the Qur'an ran along two channels at once: oral memorisation and written record. Neither was treated as sufficient alone, and the tradition is explicit that the written text existed to check the memorised one and the reverse.
The Uthmanic standardisation
Within roughly two decades of the Prophet's death, the third caliph ordered a single written recension distributed to the main garrison cities. The point was not to create a text but to fix which of several written forms would be authoritative.
What the manuscripts show
Early manuscript witnesses — Birmingham, Sana'a, Tübingen — are consistent with that account in the parts they preserve. They are worth examining directly rather than taking anyone's summary, including this one.
