Question

If God is merciful, why is there so much suffering?

The honest answer starts by refusing the two cheap versions: that suffering is not real, and that it is always deserved.

Answer

This is the oldest objection there is, and it deserves better than a slogan.

First, what Islam does not say. It does not say suffering is an illusion. It does not say every affliction is a punishment — the Qur'an and the hadith corpus both contain plain counterexamples, including prophets who suffered.

What it does say. That this life is not the whole accounting, that hardship can be a trial rather than a verdict, and that a full answer is not available from inside the situation.

Where that leaves you. It is not a proof, and it is not offered as one. It is a claim that the ledger closes somewhere you cannot currently see. That claim is either true or it is not, and it stands or falls with the larger case for revelation rather than on its own.

If this question is not abstract for you right now — if you are asking it because of something that happened — a private consultation may serve you better than an article.
